Israel-Hamas: Palestinians wary as ship carrying aid sets sail from Cyprus to Gaza

Palestinians in Rafah expressed frustrations on Tuesday about the sea route opened to funnel aid into Gaza amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

The skepticism comes as millions of Palestinians are in desperate needs of supply and a ship from Larnaca port in Cyprus carrying humanitarian aid supplies — namely food — set sail for the Gaza strip.

Though the Cypriot ship is carrying 200 tonnes of aid, the 200-mile trip could take up to two days, leaving displaced Gazans confused as to why international efforts aren’t focused on delivering aid via several border crossings in the region.

This is all [nonsense],” said Hussein Atallah, a struggling Palestinian. “We have the Egypt crossing, we have the Karam Abu Salem crossing, we have Erez crossing, and they can open dozens of crossings. Also, the border between us and Egypt is 15 kilometers long. So why the port then?" he added.

During a meeting in Strasbourg France on Tuesday, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said all routes must be used to get aid in and ward off the “humanitarian catastrophe” millions are facing as Israel continues to bombard Gaza in its mission to “destroy” Hamas militants.
